lunchtime is usually busy in restaurants

getting a job in a restaurant, any job at all, is a good way to start. one of my mates did exactly that at your age [it was a roadhouse] ... the cooks started showing him how to cook during the slower periods and he had a job there as a cook before he was 18.

after that, you move on to a better grade of restaurant. [which is what my son-in-law did; ending up as the head boy in a fairly decent place that seated over 200].

Some restaurants (especially those that are family or privately owned) will often take a high school student as an intern. They understand that you are coming in with a limited skill set, and will work around child labor laws & school activities/responsibilities. You may also want to contact a local catering company or personal chef.

The only down side I can see is your age. For insurance reasons, many places can not have you in a kitchen until you are at least 16 or 18 (depends on the state & the equipment you will be using), but it never hurts to ask.

Contact your local college and see if they offer cooking or catering courses.
