Just because someone is acting ugly toward you does not mean you have to respond in any way. They are looking for a reaction, so if you react, whether positively or negatively, they are getting what they want- they win. I just let their words hang and walk away. No law says you have to interact with people who are sending negativity in your direction. Keep your imaginary shield in place, and their words just reflect back to them, where they belong.

I think, when you are young, it's easier to keep a positive attitude. As you grow older, you realize that things can't always be controlled by a positive attitude. The more you try, the more tired you get of trying. Not to say you want to give up, but I guess you would say that you are not as naive and have become a little more hardened by the fact that it doesn't always work.

All that being said, it boils down to being as understanding as you can be toward another person and why they act a certain way. If you know it's wrong, you don't want to behave that way. Stay above it as much as you can.

Great question. It depends on the situation and who I am dealing with. If is someone who is younger and just immature I will to teach in a subtle way. If is a person who is older and is a jerk and one that I know that knows better I will challenge. Without reservation. That is where humility comes in. And not a nice pill to swallow for anyone. But it gets the lesson ingrained for the perp. You have to know that sometimes you have to get just as ugly. But you still know you acted with class. That is what puts you one step ahead of the other. A fine line to walk. You just have to walk it when the time comes. And be glad you left a great example. Respect is something all should have. And is according to what you give. Treat others as you would want them to treat you. Stand on it.

I do that by thinking about what made them ugly to me in the first place. So many people are so miserable that they try to bring everyone else down with them. I will respond to them with a smile and a gentle tone and in the end, I know they end up feeling foolish.

It is so, so true. Kindness kills. :)

In my middle age I have found it nearly impossible to remain positive all the time. Sometimes being aloof and neutral is the best i can do, never lower yourself to someones elses ugly-ness.

what i do is that i try to have some understanding. When am inschool, and people are acting stupid, i think to my self, if this they way there being raised? Are they hiding sumthing? I think i just have some kind of compassion towards people, and undertanding. That's what i do. Try it. Maybe it will work for you.

-Good Luck!

easier said than done, but...

you need to know who you are. if you know that you are a good person, then tell yourself that these people are only trying to act ugly and you know the truth. just shrug off their comments and actions. also, "kill" them with kindness. the angrier they get, the nicer you should get. it works every time, and becomes quite amusing at the end. it'll make you feel better.

Ask yourself when the last time time was you got ugly with someone. While you're thinking about it, the sins of others will begin to fade.

If you can do that you're one in a million.
I've learned the hard way, you have to stand
up for yourself and have your say.

I walk off. Sooner or later they'll wonder why you do that and they'll have to ask. That's how it works with me.
