Definitely not! The minimalization of some of the smaller companies (and due to this less random releases!) has streamlined the market to better serve the consumer. If anything the market's growing. The only problem is that due to the popularity of high end product (certain packs now can run upwards of $500 & that's for 4-6 cards!) the market has only recently readdressed the need for cheaper product for the set builders & the kids who don't have to get an autographed jersey card in every pack to be satisfied.

As for your cards, the value is mainly determined by the scarcity & demand for that particular player or players. Cards from the late 80's through early 90's are often worthless due to the overproduction of these brands (Donruss & Topps especially!). A Sosa, Bonds, & Randy Johnson rookie combined are worth around $10 if you go with the cheapest versions of these players. If you have to sell, go ahead and buy a Beckett's Baseball magazine to see if your cards are worth anything. Just make sure they're in good condition!!! Some dealers won't even buy unless the cards are graded nowadays!!! good luck!!!

Baseball cards will always go through peaks and valleys in popularity. I used to collect them as a child, got back into it after college. I finally decided that they were doing few people any good by sitting in my closet, so I sold them on eBay ... and bought some new golf clubs with the proceeds.

I'd hold on to them until you are ready to give them up. Don't worry about trying to time the finances of them; that's not why you should be in the hobby. You collect them because you like them. Once that joy leaves, then you can explore sales.

Older cards will always retain their value but everything from 1987 and up will drop because of over production. Inserts and all these specialized one of a kind cards will also go down. Most of the autograph cards, of key players only, that came in packs will retain their value. The days of escalating value for baseball cards is over for the time being.

As a collection, it's not going to die out. Some cards will go up and others down in value, the key is trying to time it. But in general they're not going the way of Pokemon...

Try and get a "Beckett" price guide. You will be lucky to get half of "book value" but at least this way you don't get taken advantage of.
