I felt just like you! I have cats and dogs and needed a vacuum that had great suction and didn't break down all the time.no matter what abuse i gave it. I looked at what the professionals used and figured they must be dependable. I got a Sanitaire - it's what you see cleaning services use and for good reason they last forever and suck up dirt and hair like crazy. I got mine at a local vacuum specialty store 8 years ago and for not more than you would pay for any other quality vacuum like Electrolux or Dyson. They service them at the same place and are great to deal with! I have never for a minute regretted my decision. You can check them out online if you are interested.

I've been through Hoover, Electrolux, and Bissel. We have two dogs and three cats and the Dyson is the only vacuum that I'll ever buy. Some reports say that other machines are better, but in my experience the Dyson gets up more hair/dirt, etc than any I've used.
As an example, we had the top of the line Electrolux canister vacuum with the 25 year warranty. I cleaned our den with it, then followed it with the Dyson. I filled the Dyson twice with hair the electrolux did not pick up.

Bissell and Eureka stinks. Every single one I got spit dirt out within a few days if not the first time used. I finally broke down and bought me a Dyson and that thing works great. Have had it a year with no problems. If that isn't in your budget, I have had a few Dirt Devils that lasted at least 4 years each. If you are going to spend lots of money make it worth it cause I bought the $289 Hoover and it lasted three months.

Consumer Report did an article on vacuums a few months ago. If you don't have access to a copy, you can read it at your local library. Personally, I hate the things and call them "boa constrictors" because of their nasty habit of always wrapping around my legs. Electrolux has been the most dependable in my experience. Trying to go by brand name is not a good idea, because within brands, there are good and bad choices. Even price is not an indicator of how well a vavuum will work. Good luck on your quest. I have had over 30 of the damn things 8~)

My friend swears by his upright Hoover. And I never had a problem with my Electrolux (20 years old - - don't know about the new ones with all the plastic parts). Whatever you decide, I found you can get a good vacuum from a vacuum repair shop. Second hand but gone through for problems. Ask them what vacuum they receive with the least problems.
Also, uprights normally have better suction than canisters because less distance from motor.

I have a Bissel upright bagless, and it works well for me. I'm not really a fan of Electrolux or some Oreck vacuums, though: On the latter, it's next to impossible to find bags for them, unless you order them and pay an arm and a leg.
I used a lot of Dirt Devils when I worked as a housekeeper, and they did work well. But professional-grade work can be hard on a machine.

Dyson vacuum is a good brand and costs a bit more. The other thing to do is find a used Elextrolux or other high end vacuum at a sale that is not too old.

Hoover or Dirt Devil are both good. Sears backs up their store brand.
