Wild Goldfish are native to China and Asia and the Philippines in general but are now found in Lakes, ponds, and sloughs across the USA. They might be found where ever there is a combination of clean water, soft bottom and lots of vegetation. Lake Erie boasts a large wild goldfish population.

Here is a photo of a wildcaught goldie from the Douglas Res. in Tennessee. Most people mistake them for other types of fish. (mostly large shiners)

Goldfish can hybridize with common carp and can compete with native fish. They should not be release into the wild. They can reach weights of up to 3 1/2 pounds.

Basically you won't. The closest thing to a goldfish you can find in nature is the common carp which is found in lakes and rivers throughout the world. Goldfish are the result of many years of careful line breeding.

goldfish are naturaly koi, and koi are carp. so if you have a large lake or a river you could go there and probably see the carp topping out. or you could buy some polorised lensed glasses that will take the glare of water and you can see whats in the water a little clearer. goldfish are bread for pets.

Goldfish, are merely a species of CARP, they can survive almost any type conditions and are very hardy. In the wild, they do not look anything like the hybrids. They have almost no color or resemblence to the store varieties.

All the goldfish varieties originate from China (including the ranchu and the ryukin, which many these days associate more with Japan), except for:

Japan: the jikin and the tosakin
USA: the veiltail and the comet, although this is not certain
UK: the Bristol shubunkin (our own fish)
