and what is it used for..??? i just saw one at a medieval craft fair, but it was too busy to ask the herb lady about it.

What you probably saw was ginseng, also called mandrake. Panax quinquefolius, or American ginseng roots are available from Johnny's Selected Seeds. There is a picture on his website, which should enable you to determine if that is truly what you saw. See the link below.

There are a number of other ginsengs, most notably Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng). I don't know where you get viable roots for that.

Ginseng has a number of medicinal uses. Wilkipedia has a good overview article. That link is also included below.

Be warned that ginseng is not easy to grow and takes a long time to develop.

i don't know where one could buy it other than the fair or perhaps an occult store. it's very poisonous but is also thought of as an aphrodisiac

I don't believe there are any modern uses, though they were used in rituals centuries ago.
