Music. I can appreciate good lyrics, but generally I listen to the song and not the words. Take the early Beatles songs... tons of lame lyrics - but great to listen to.
I find the beat, catchiness and sounds of the music more appealing than the actual words.

first the music has to interest me then I listen to the lyrics. If the lyrics are weak, I usually won't be interested in the song.
Lyrics don't have to tell a story or make me feel anything; they just shouldn't be stupid or repetitive. Music is the same. Give me something to make me remember the song.

I put music when I don't understand text very well (for example English or German lyrics) while If I listen to an Italian song I can listen to the text, too usually when It is alternative.

Thats how i can relate to the song via the lyrics. If you can feel and agree with what the song is about or where the singer is coming from then you will enjoy the music that much more. I often feel that I could have written most of Linkin Parks songs because I relate to them so much its scary.
