Unflipping believable... this congress rolls, over plays dead and thats all they have done since they started ! They are irrelevant to the polital process. JUST STAY ON VACATION PERMANENTLY !!! You guys are just giving up your sole authority to protect the public, you just might as well dont come back.

Quote from movie "V" :

"And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror."

Stupid and foolish on the part of Congress.

Rushing to pass a bill without doing any serious evaluation or legal analysis of the implications.

And why does Bush -- who has never respected the limits of the law in this area before -- suddenly need the ability to tap anyone for 120 days, when he could already tap any foreign source for up to a year?

Current law: 50 USC 1802 --- "the President, through the Attorney General, may authorize electronic surveillance **without a court order** ... to acquire foreign intelligence information for periods of up to one year if the Attorney General certifies in writing under oath that ....there is no substantial likelihood that the surveillance will acquire the contents of any communication to which a United States person is a party"

Current law. Up to one year, without a warrant, as long as it's an overseas tap and not a US person.

So, obviously, it's not about foreign surveillance....

Why not try quoting some of our Founding Fathers, or others who suffered through the War of 1812 (with the first attack on American soil after we became a country, where the White House burned?)

In case you forgot, big stuff happened in the UK, you know car bombs? The President gets a National Security briefing every morning, and with the state of the world as it is, you need to do some things to protect the nation. The spy bill, which is just an update of a previous bill since 1978, puts broader focus on foreign and some domestic calls, and expands the "key words" to watch for. If you have something to hide, then you have every right to fear. But while Congress may go on vacation, terrorism does not. Get a clue. You need to spend more time reading history and paying attention to world events than quoting movies.

EDIT: coragryph: it has to be expanded to include US citizens and legal immigrants because THEY CAN BE PLOTTING TOO.....New Jersey/JFK plot a couple months ago ring a bell? That had one US citizen involved, UK had 2-3 legal british citizens. This has nothing to do with countries/nationality. It is one Dogma (Jihad) vs. everyone, including "their own."

As Coragryph said it is about foreign taps. But i do share your sentiment. That movie struck such a cord with me i watched it over and over. I too feel our liberties our soldiers are fighting for are being eroded in the name of freedom. Our governments tell us that the enemy is among us and they need to monitor us to keep us safe. I think terrorists are winning because through their actions they are allowing our governments to invade our basic freedom of privacy. Further more are they not also waging a war of terror on us to get us to go along with what they want? "Governments should fear their people not people should fear their Governments."

Just because you don't agree with something that makes it unflipping believable?

When you have to quote a movie, you already lost the argument. Come back to reality, it's waiting for you.
