Because they're all in it together. Any opposition that's displayed on the hill is nothing more than a dog and pony show to fool the devoted followers.

The democrats are not, as some might want us to think, totally inept. They talk a good game when they are campaigning, but now they are in the driver's seat, and the reality of the Islamic threat to the security and safety of this country has reared its ugly head. They can no longer talk their nonsense about fear mongering or immediate pull out and defeat because they realize that the consequences of such actions would be on them. Ultimately, they will try and do what they think is best for America - and, SURPRISE, it might be more or less consistent with what President Bush has been doing all along.

Irrational fear and political stupidity. Nobody wanted to have the finger pointed at them in the media -- so they ignored all sense and rushed through another stupid law.

Current law: 50 USC 1802 --- "the President, through the Attorney General, may authorize electronic surveillance **without a court order** ... to acquire foreign intelligence information for periods of up to one year if the Attorney General certifies in writing under oath that ....there is no substantial likelihood that the surveillance will acquire the contents of any communication to which a United States person is a party"

Current law. Up to one year, without a warrant, as long as it's an overseas tap and not a US person.

So, why does Bush -- who has never respected the limits of the law in this area before -- suddenly need the ability to tap anyone for 120 days, when he could already tap any foreign source for up to a year?

Obviously, it's not about foreign surveillance....

According to the article, it's a temporary authority designed to give congress more time on a permanent law. I don't see it as a cave in.

The question should be, "Why did the Democrats cave in yet again?"

My answer is because they don't have the votes. And they are weak.

Because they knew it would fail in the house. Congress is a game of chess, not checkers.
