I am currently staying in Boston with my husband and 2 daughters, and we are from Alabama. Everywhere we go people are giving us horrendous looks, bad glances, dirty stares, rude treatment at restaurants, etc. We are headed to New York in 2 days to finish our trip. I am hoping we do not have the same, horrible time we had here in Boston. Is this becuase we are from the South and have accents different from theirs? And are all New Englanders this awful?

Actually, the problem lies in that state, and in that state alone! For some unearthly reason a majority of people living in Massachusetts think their crap don't stink--mind you I'm not saying the entire state is like this. However, nowhere else in New England will you find as many people who will look down their nose at you as in that area. It has nothing to do with being stressed, having a busy life, or being in a hurry and everything to do with thinking they are better than you because you clearly are not from there.

My husband and I were treated the same way on Martha's Vineyard and in Boston. Go to New Hampshire...better class of people there! :o)

Wow! I am so sorry you are having such an awful time in Boston.

However, we are called Mass-Holes for a reason. We are not the friendliest lot of people. To some, it may because you are Southern, and you are walking on our turf, but it also may be because your openly displaying your "Southern hospitality". Most New Englanders are reserved, professional, and just want to get from one place to another. Southerners (from the ones I've met) are almost overly friendly and talkative.

Here in Boston, and NYC as well, if you send a friendly smile to the person sitting across from you on the subway, you will not get a good response.

But for the most part, Sotherners are usually very friendly...and New Englanders aren't. The two cultures just don't mix well.

Hope you have a good time in NYC...and don't give up on Boston yet! Once you get to know us, we're not as "horrible and rude" as we seem.

Don't take it personal, its the normal way of life in Boston. Everybody is in a hurry and usually cant be bothered to help. The folks down south would never do that stuff, right. We got over the Civil War a long time ago.

Howdy, I am from Texas, and the answer is a resounding YES. You'll have a better time in NYC. They're not rude because of your accent, apparently they are all in a hurry to be somewhere and don't have time for the pleasantries we Southern folk are known for. Don't take offense in NY.
By the way, yankees aren't stupid, they just sound like it. LOL.
By the way, I love Ala, Huntsville in particular. Nothing like the Heart of Dixie.

No what it is is that we are very polite and well mannered here and give every one there personal space. We also have no tolerance what so every for those who don't follow the rules of polite society. by the way talking to strangers in a line is considered rude not friendly.
