Our yard has now got more dirt and mounds than it does grass. Does anyone have any cheap recommendations on how to get rid of them? Have tried chemicals, etc., but nothing seems to help. They have officially taken over.

They don't like vibration, put some of those whirly things like pin wheels you can stick in the ground around your yard and they will leave

According to the exterminators at the UMKC University Extension, the best way is with mole traps such as "Victor" brand b/c the poisons are not effective and the other electric vibrations are a waste of money.
A dog will tear up your yard but they ARE efffective.
Killing off the grubs w/poison helps reduce their food supply but not very much b/c they also eat earthworms and those are good for your yard.
Mole bait is another waste of time.
I heard that Juicy Fruit gum will get rid of them but it did not work for me.
Mothballs and drowning with a hose are also ineffective.
Castor oil was also a waste of my time.
I've used the Victor traps and have had some luck with them but they have to be set JUST RIGHT or the moles go right around them.
If you have a lot of time and patience or a highly sensitive motion activated light or alarm, you can focus the sensor on the area you want to monitor for their activity (in the evening or early morning hours when they are most active, )
and it will indicate when activity is occurring so you can watch it, and when you see it, quickly scoop that mole out of his tunnel with your shovel and bash the heck out of him before he gets away.
Check your local University Extension office for more information about the moles in your area. Look it up online or in the phonebook.
Good Luck!

A moles main diet is grubs. Treat the yard for grubs. No food, no moles.
