And no, I'm not in there right now. :)

This is the second time in a year this has happened. I live in a very old section of the city, and tenants in this building leave their large windows wide open so they just fly in (which I don't do). I didn't think a bat could crawl in to my place underneath the door, but I witnessed one doing exactly that firsthand.

I'm petrified of these things, but I would like to avoid calling an exterminator if at all possible. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of this thing myself? Is there anything they are attracted to that I could use to lure it out of my place and into the hallway? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Jay9ball - I had to stop by the office, so I'm posting this from work. And if the bat is looking for "young blood", it could do better than what's coursing through my 32-year-old veins. The blood bank IS right down the street, though...

I did get a chuckle from your response. Thanks! :)

Usually bats will not bother you if you don't bother them.
It's when he changes into Dracula is the time to worry. When that happens he's just after some "young blood". And look on the bright side... you'll have immortality.
Or, when you notice the transformation, run, don't walk, to the nearest Blood Bank. He'll have a field day there and you'll have plenty of time to get home and lock up all the doors and windows.
Hold on... is this a joke? How did you post this if not at home?

Well, most bats are attracted to insects since that's what they eat. You could use insects to lure him out into the hallway, but however that would be hard to do since you'd probably have to go buy some and set them loose in the hallway, which could be annoying. Other 2 ways to get rid of it are leaving you're door open and all the windows open. This works best at night. If you don't want to leave your window open, since that's how bats got in in the first place, you can try capturing it yourself. Get some thick gloves, because the bat may bite while being held (although it won't attack any other time). Make sure you don't catch it in flight, since that could hurt it. Put it under something like a large coffee can, then slip a paper or cardboard piece underneath it so that you can pick it up afterwards. Then, pick it up and release it outside.

Sorry hun. If you are that scared, my suggestion may not be any help to you unless you know someone that could help you.
My son & I use to get bats into a home we had many years ago. I took a large fuzzy bath towel and swung it at him/her. When the towel got close, the toenails got caught in the terry cloth. I then quickly threw the rest of the towel over it & tossed it and towel outside. (Had an opening ready). It worked quick and safe. Just a few minutes later I was able to go out & retrieve my towel (which went into the wash).

We found one in our garage last night when we came home. That was the first time it happened, and I was afraid one of my cats would catch it and try to bring it into the house. Ugh! After circling for a while it did go out the garage door. Perhaps if you open your largest window and gently herd the bat towards that wall, it will stop panicking and make its exit.

You can call animal control. But whatever you do just be careful. Down here where I live at we have had several cases of bats with rabies recently.
In one man donated blood after being bitten by a bat with rabies not knowing he'd gotten rabies from it. His blood inflected several other people with rabies.
Just be careful just in case. Usually they are not going to bother you. They are after mosquitoes and other bugs.

You need a broom! Take broom and swat the bat. It will stun it, and then you can sweep it out of your apartment. I have done this a couple of times.

It might sound awful, but it works -- and you don't have to kill it.

after you have swept the bat out...put a net at the large windows to prevent the bat from coming in again...
