Senator Obama is smart enough to know that nukes are over kill, literally. Imagine going after a pesky fly with a sledge hammer when a fly swatter will do nicely.
Those who would advocate the use of nukes either don't know or don't care about what the results of a nuclear bomb are. There is no precision bombing with nukes. They are messy and often affect people thousands of miles away. Even small ones can get out of hand.
One needs only to look at the photographs and movies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 to see what happens with nunkes. Those were relatively small and primative compared to what we have today.
So, yes the Senator is very much correct in not advocating the use of nukes.

maybe you can expound on this question a bit more. what do you mean "not wanting to use nuclear weapons "involving civilians"? that he doesn't want to use nuclear weapons on civilians? or what?
never mind. I see the other answers.
Well, I imagine we should HOPE that no other country should have to make that decision regarding the United States, since we are a land of civilians, INNOCENT civilians.
Sometime these politicians sound and act like a bunch of 8th graders...no wait, FIRST graders.

Because someone who is not naive realizes you can not take any of our weapons off the table in dealing with any enemy of the United States. A person who is as naive to take weapons off the table and wants to run our military into the territory of one of our allies who has nuclear weapons and is fighting their own internal strife that any kind of external threat (and saying you might invade a country sure is that) will have the danger that the government could be overthrown or a coup attempted by the military. Again it shows how not ready for prime time Obama is and how he does not understand the diplomatic roles even that he says he would conduct. He is in reality now a danger to this country if he become president because he is so out of touch with what is needed in this age of terrorism.

I think Obama’s comments are being taken out of context. He stated that he wouldn’t use nuclear weapons on civilians to go after Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Since those two countries are allies, that seems like a reasonable statement. I don’t know why everyone is getting so excited.

Candidate Commander-In-Chief Barack Obama said "I think it would be a profound mistake for us to use nuclear weapons in any circumstance" Obama said, with a pause, "involving civilians." Then he quickly added, "Let me scratch that. There's been no discussion of nuclear weapons. That's not on the table.
He's being attacked for not being able to answer a question truthfully!!!

He's being attacked because he wants to escalate the war by invading yet another country. This seems to be the democrat way--historically speaking.
Besides that, he likes to stick his foot in his mouth first: I think it would be a profound mistake for us to use nuclear weapons in any circumstance," Obama said, with a pause, "involving civilians." Then he quickly added, "Let me scratch that. There's been no discussion of nuclear weapons. That's not on the table."

Well, for one thing, he's talking about "sending troops into Pakistan" without having had conversation one with any officials from Pakistan...using conventional weapons and "ruling out" something that scares the crap out of his voter base....who don't want to accept the effectiveness of nuclear deterence. It EMBOLDEN'S THE ENEMY!!!!
Don't you left-wing dummies think that Al Qaeda would have used a nuke on US by now if they had the opportunity????
Obama's going to go the same way Howard Dean did if he keeps talking about crap he obviously doesn't understand.

I'm thinking the fact that Pakistan is an allies of ours and do you honestly think you can nuke without hitting civilians? Obama's lack of experience and knowledge in this area will get innocent people killed and he has threatened our allies. Not too smart.

Because a responsible President never takes an option like that off the table, There are circumstances where the US would be justified in using nukes. That said, I trust Obama with that decision more than George W. Bush. I've always been afraid that W. would use nukes just to see the pretty lights.
