The 4th estate is dead for all practical purposes it has been co-opted by corporate interests, and those interests control the editorial boards.

Any thinking person needs to accept what we can expect from the profit driven media. One thing is certain. We can expect the self-serving mediacracy to continue to serve itself. To think otherwise, that is to believe or even to hope that transnational corporations will have the best interests of the citizenry at heart, is truly naïve. In Edward S. Herman and Robert W. McChesney’s book, The Global Media, The New Missionaries of Corporate Capitalism, they write,

The commercial model has its own internal logic and, being privately owned and relying on advertiser support, tends to erode the public sphere and to create a ‘culture of entertainment’ that is incompatible with a democratic order. Media outputs are commodified and serve market ends, not citizen needs."

Even when journalism was more investigative, it was always about the money. Investigative reports could be time consuming and expensive, but they paid off. Now there is too much competition for news. Journalists report what is cheap and easy to report since that returns the greatest margin.

The unwashed masses are so apathetic, they would rather watch B-list celebrities dance and the average man match wits with school children.

Yes. Because we the people no longer have an attention span longer than 30 seconds. We don't read the news paper any more and we would rather hear about Lindsey Lohan's latest DUI that George W. Bush's blatant abuses of power. We are fat, dumb and happy, and things aren't going to change until our lives aren't so comfortable.

There are still some publications that do investigative reporting. Insight Mag, The Washington Times. I tire of the agenda driven press and broadcast media. I believe that they actually think we believe everything they spit out.

Can you still even call them journalists? I can read a teleprompter and look pretty in front of a camera - does that make ME a journalist?

Yes it has...we're now at the point that a lot of people trust the media even LESS than they trust the government.
