I think we have seen an end to the draconian application of social conservative values - not social conservative values. Truthfully, I do not think the U.S.A. has the temperament required for socialism.

Conservatives had their chance with these "wedge" issues there was all this talk in the 2004 election about gay marriage and after Bush got elected he did nothing about it and the issue has since ebb and flowed into the political arena.
I would not say that the war on social issues is lost but using abortion and gay marriage is close to dead. Conservatives need a new issue. Health care might work but it is a bipartisan effort.

Since when has "conservative values" been the kind of things the neo-cons support?
Look at Rudy McRomney .. what *exactly* is "conservative" about them? They are big government warhawks, they will strip your liberty as fast as any Democrat.
..And when exactly did the so called "party of christian values" support bombing people? Where exactly did Jesus say.. if they don't follow UN resolutions then we bomb them. Jesus never used force on anyone.
Yes, the battle is lost. You missed it, Go home. The Republicans have lost their way completely (except for Ron Paul, who is the only one that makes any sense.)

If you really look into this, people only have socially conservative values when they are attempting to impose them on other people. When it's put up or shut up, socially conservative people make the same mistakes everyone else does and then make excuses for why it's not their fault.
Look at Rush Limbaugh and his addiction problem. He's on record stating that addicts should go to prison, that rehab is bullshit, yet when the addict is himself, he's off to rehab spouting justifications about why his misbehavior isn't his fault.

As a European (a Brit) I can tell you many here think you are crazy following us down this route towards a completely permissive society.
There is a sense here of a society in crisis as societal rules have totally broken down - crime, underage pregnancies, drugs, alcohol - all out of control.
Once the genie is out of the bottle you can't put it back.

Rob's response has completely nailed it. Those who propose social liberalism and following the tracks of the Europeans are wackos and I truly mean that.
There is nothing great about a society that has run wild with no morals and no constraints. Once there, it's impossible to get back on track.

If the dems do get control of the government in 2008, the country will learn it's mistake quickly enough. People will be voting on the Iraq issue and aren't really thinking about the other conciquences of voting democrat.
