I have just been up to my hospital this week and had a scan in which the sonographer has measured my baby at 9lbs in weight already, being as I have 4 weeks left and babies gain half a pound a week in those weeks, this leads to the possibility that I would have an 11lb baby!!! I have a consultant appt on the 15th and want to be induced or have a c-section at 40 weeks, what is the likelihood of this. Also I actually think that they have my due date wrong and I am actually 38 weeks. Just need to know if anyone has had similar experiance and what happened to them.

I have had a 9lb 8oz baby, 6 years ago, however I have tried to tell them that not all labours are the same, or babies and I am not prepared to go through it again

To Lucioliana- I don't want either of these to happen, this is why I think that they have my dates wrong, due to size of baby, the fact I know my body etc. I don't think I actually said I wanted either - these were just options that the midwife triage said may be an option and I am aware of the risks with both. I believe in having a natural birth wherever possible, unless of it is neseccary medically. I asked the question to obtain an overview with anyone who had experianced similar, I am not being a selfish person and I resent the fact that you say I would put my baby at risk for my own self satisfaction, you dont even know me. By all means give advice, but dont judge everyone by such little information obtained.

I am a diagnostic medical sonographer and I will tell you that the estimated fetal weight is just that........estimated. They sonographer did not explain that it is plus or minus more than a pound. It gets less and less accurate as the due date approaches. Ultrasound is not as accurate during the later month of pregnancy. Your OB doctor realizes this and can explain what his opinion is on this during your next visit. Relax, you won't have an 11 pound baby. It also depends on the skills of the sonographer. Measuring the head and abdominal circumference determines the weigh. If these measurements are not done accurately then the fetal weigh value is worthless.
Good luck. Do not stress over this. If the baby is too large then a c-section is not the end of the world. The due date that is determined by ultrasound is also plus or minus a few weeks during the 3rd trimester. The most accurate dating is done during the 1st trimester. If you had this done then go by the date they gave you then. You will have a gorgeous baby soon. I had a 10 pound, 23 inch long son about 16 years ago. I was a happy camper on delivery day. Trust your doctor to help you make the best decision of you and your child..

My son was 9lbs 14 ozs. when he was born. So he was a big baby also. When in your last weeks the baby does slow up on growing. so don't worry. Most Drs. won't do a c-section unless their is something wrong and unless you are over due induction is not a way to go. (very painful) Relax and don't worry. All due dates give a two week plus or minus so nothing is right on. Good luck and relax!!!!

Don't worry! I was told at all scans of both my 2 children that they would be small babies, one was 8 lbs 9 oz and the other a wopping 10 lbs!!! So they are very often wrong!
Having big babies is fine though, totally do-able although i would recommend a tens machine and plenty of gas and air. Both of my labours were natural and wonderful experiences, if not a tad painful ;)
Good luck, and try and rest and enjoy the next few weeks

I actually did have an 11 lb girl in 1974 followed by a 9lb 5oz boy in 1979 and I am only 5'3" and on neither occasion was I offered a c-section despite asking for it. I gather that these days they are rather more freely available fortunately for you younger Mums.
I wouldn't recommend the natural delivery of babies this size. They sure made my eyes water!

My friend is having the same problem. Her body is trying to have her son yet the hospital wont let her deliver and she is 36 weeks!!! Her baby is 8lbs and almost 24inches long! He is a big boy. This is all because her doctor wrote the wrong weekage on her chart and now the doctors at the hospital think she is only 32 weeks!! I think my friends due date is totally off too!! She was pregnant before me and i am only 33 1/2 weeks!!

Hi, I was told my son was going to be big, as for as I can remember they didn't give me a weight indication, but I ended up going in to labour on my own at 37 weeks and he was 8lb! So if I had gone to full term he would have been huge! I'd defo ask to be induced early the baby will still be manageable to deliver naturally instead of you having a C section. A baby is classed as full term at 37 weeks anyway, so by the time you have your appointment they may let be induced.

It happens a lot. Those are guesses anyway. It can be that the baby is only 7 pounds.. lol.
Its probably more likely that you're further along than they think you are.
My grandmother had 11 pound babies in under an hour. Four of them that way. You'd be suprised what youre body can do.

LOL yes but mine was the other way around, i was told my baby was about 6lbs turns out she was 8lb 11oz...
You need to talk to your consultant as soon as you can and explain your fears.
If you think your due date is wrong he needs to listen to you, i would advise against a c section unless there is a medical reason to do so, and I'm afraid unless your baby is huge they probably wont do one, but you could be induced at 38 weeks...
you need to have a long talk with your doctor..
good luck

they will not let the baby get to big. My son was 9lbs but the nurses said he looked only 6lbs because I was told anything over 9lbs and they would c section me so they didnt want to scare me. They will prob take the baby early so nothing happens. If u go in labor and push and push then find out baby is to fat to pop out then go to c section, there is the potential to hurt you and hurt the baby. They will not let it go to far.
