...no public school system, and the top 1% own 90% of the nation's wealth? All I can think of is Haiti. It follows the model of what right wingers think would be an improvement on our system.

Yes, I'd like us to be more like Europe!
That's better than becoming like Haiti, Sudan, Guatemala, etc.
And no, we can't just go there and live, they have laws about how long you can stay and it's not easy for illegals to work.

You are describing much of Africa, and South Asia. It used to be a good description of South America but there is a lot of changes going on there. It will be 50 years before we know how well they are really succeeding.

Mexico and much of Central America is like that however. Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are teetering each way and so it will be a while to see which way they will go.

Costa Rica had a good system that was improving from a very low place for many years till the dropped their Socialist Government and the quatity of life dropped like a rock.

There is a terrific new tool still in beta from Google that shows the reality over time about many quality of life issues. As it is all UN data it is not spun in any way.

You can actually see Costa Rica take a drop in 1990 and all the usual Socialist countries rushing past us. Even places like Costa Rica, and Chile (and even Cuba) will be easily passing us if they try.

Gee, I don't think any of those have a Constitutional Republic... and those same top 10% ers pay most of the taxes.....
"..... * In 2003, the latest year for which complete data is available, the top one percent of taxpayers paid just over 34 percent of all income taxes, compared to over 37 percent in 2000 and 33 percent in 1997
* The top 10 percent of taxpayers paid almost 66 percent of income taxes in 2003, compared to 67 percent in 2000 and 63 percent in 1997
* Middle 50 percent of taxpayers paid a roughly even share of the taxes in 2003, 2000 and 1997: 12.6 percent, 12 percent and 14 percent, respectively
* The bottom 50 percent of taxpayers bore less of the burden in 2003 compared to 2000, paying almost 3.5 percent of taxes compared to over 4 percent three years earlier. The bottom half of taxpayers has paid a decreasing share of taxes since 1980....."
