it died when malcolm mcclaren admitted that the idea of punk was actually a business idea to make material wealth in about 78
79 then saw a second wave of true punk which then transposed into "New Wave" finishing off in the early 80's.
everything after has just been pure industry manufactured "pop punk" - think Transvision Vamp - g*d Wendy James was gorgeous - whatever happened to her ?

anyway, as someone who grew up in that era, and was a "punk" I cant stand the fashion junkies on the street nowadays pretending to be punks.

punk is dead; long may it rule

Although you have asked this question in the Trivia category rather than the Music (or Polls & Surveys) category - I'll still offer my opinion on this matter and run the risk of the inevitable thumbs down I quite often get for doing so.

I began to listening to Punk Rock in 1978. There were several waves that came and went from The Sex Pistols to Anti Pasti to G.B.H. and Crass. I think Punk in North America (i.e. Bad Brains, Black Flag, D.O.A. and M.D.C.) was a valid form of music and a social/political awareness from about 1981 to about 1991.

After changing countless people's minds about rock music, and laying so much groundwork as pioneers for so many years, the punks had made it possible for a record like 'Nevermind' by Nirvana to sell a certified Gold and Platinum LP/CD. No Punk record before had ever done that.

One could say that since Punk was never about selling Platinum LPs that that was when it died - or made its "breakthrough."

* My regards to felix. Punk is dead: Long may it be remembered!

Punk, for all intents and purposes, is dead. What's out there is only commercial pop-rock masquerading as punk. Or they've hijacked the term "punk" and turned it into something meaningless, so the lifestyle that used to be called "punk" should now be called something else in order to differentiate itself.

Punk most definitely is not dead! It's alive and kicking as usual. I'll ask my son to answer.
