Your question actually has both a yes and no answer. Do you now have a criminal record? No you do not because Police were not called and you were not charged. However many retailers (not sure if Sears is one) put names of shoplifters into a database that other retailers can view. This mean if you apply at JC Penney and they have access to this database they could see your theft and refuse to hire you. for more shoplifting info and rights see website below

your "friend" got off easy. I got busted shop lifting when I was 14. it was a cheap 5 dollar necklace, and the cops were called. Since i was 14 it didnt go on my record but if I had been just one year older, I was told it would've been on my record until i was 18. If your friend is an adult, the next time she gets busted, they probably wont be so kind, and it will go on her record. Employers want someone they can trust. If they see that you steal, then obviously, they cant trust you. or atleast thats how they see it.

Sounds like she got off easy. They made a record in case she ever goes there again and does the same thing they have grounds on which to prosecute. At this point since there is no police involvement and no conviction in a court there is nothing to go on her record. If she does it again the story will be different.

NO, but your friend needs to quit it, because most stores will call police! She will go to jail, and it will be on her permanent record!
