Instead of using a 24 hour clock, the time between 12 midnight 00:00:00 and 12 noon is AM - morning. The time after 12 noon to 23:59:59 is considered PM - Post Meridian - evening.

Don't listen to those who think you're crazy or stupid for asking this question.... it just goes to show they don't know either...
Both abbreviations are derived from Latin.
am stands for ante meridian which means before midday or before noon.
pm stands for post meridian which means after midday or after noon.
The terms 12am and 12pm cause confusion and should not be used as neither the 12am nor the 12pm designation is correct. Use 12 noon and 12 midnight instead. In fact, to avoid ambiguity, airlines, railroads and insurance companies use 12:01am for an event beginning the day and 11:59pm for an event ending the day.
Hope this answered your question... It is now 8:41am where I live...

They are short for:
Ante meridiem = before midday (noon)
Post meridiem = after midday (noon)
We designate am from 6 till 11:59 then we say 12 noon or 12 pm till 5:59.

To make it short and simple: AM is anything before noon (lunchtime). As soon as you hit 1 second after noon, it becomes PM.
