Jerry Springer is classless, tasteless trash, with stupid topics like prostitution and promiscuity and sex constantly, and judging by the accents of some of the guests, I'm guessing the majority of them come to the show from the Southern states. Seeing this, this show blantly stereotypes these people as redneck white trash yokels and hicks who sleep and inbreed with farm animals and other family members, live in trailer parks or worship the Confederacy (see those KKK shows.) Especially when they come out to the stage dressed in Western gear or mention they're FROM a Southern state, then cue that hick non-hit country song they always play, followed by an audience do-si-do. You see all this, and it's clear we're living in some Bizarro Land.
And you find this exciting? I've seen more class in selected episodes of "Roseanne" and "Married... With Children."

Yes, it's scripted and they are paid. Former actors came forth and said so and there was some legal change as a result.
Once the legal system found out the show was scripted they could no longer show people physically attacking each other (showing the full on impact) without disclosing to viewers that it was all scripted and not real.
The show chose to not disclose that to the public. So you'll notice that now, compared to the first several seasons of the show, the camera will cut away instead of showing the fighting they used to show.

For the same reason why people enjoy boxing or wrestling or stopping to look at an accident scene, and you are by no means alone, or even weird as the fellow below might be suggesting.
I don't think they have to pay them. It's their five minutes of fame, and sometimes they get a plane ride and get put up in an hotel.
I think that some of th cases are real. In other cases I don't even think they know each other.

There are alot of insecure little idiots out there that will do anything, including airing their dirty laundry on national TV, to get on TV. These people are pathetic and these talk shows use them to bump ratings. I guarantee you that behind the scenes people like Springer and Povich are laughing at them. I call it Trailer Trash TV.

Well, it takes all kinds to make the world go round, but I think it's obvious they are scripting these shows. The question is, "Where do they find these poor people?"
