prune: I trim off each flower after it is done blooming, to encourage the growth in the plant and not in the rose hips/seed pod

fertilize: Each month, I sprinkle down slow release fertilizer so they get enough nutrients

water: In the mornings, I water the plants, at the base, as if you leave moisture on the leaves too much, molds/fungus can grow and desicate (make the plant drop leaves) which will prohibit flowers and growth

Watch for insects and for disease... use sprays that you can get at hardware stores or garden centers to get rid of the bugs (aphids, worms) that like to eat or nest in your roses... and to get rid of the powdery diseases too

Make sure your roses have good drainage & the proper soil enriched with compost. Water thoroughly once a week. Be sure to feed it rose food according to instructions on package until fall. I use Miracle Grow.

When mildew is present:
Spray with a mixture of 1 cup milk to 9 parts water
OR
Mix:
4 tbsp. baking soda
2 tbsp. Murphy's Oil Soap
1 gallon water
...and apply when you see taletale white spots.

If you see blackspot on the leaves, remove them & use a fungicide for the initial breakout, then use baking soda solution for general fungus diseases (1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 tablespoon lightweight horticultural oil to 1 gallon of water), applied late in the evening or very early in the morning, the day after a thorough watering – the foliage needs to be dry so direct sun won’t burn.

Black Spot Remover Tonic:
15 tomato leaves
2 small onions
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
Chop tomato leaves & onions into finely minced pieces, & steep them in the alcohol overnight. Paint the brew on both the top & bottom of any infected leaves.

Antidote for Rose Aphid
Hose down with a hard spray. If that doesn't get rid of them use:
1 tbsp. liquid Ivory soap
2 cups water

To prevent slugs from doing damage, spread coffee grounds( in moderation) around base of bush.

In the North, protect plants the first year you plant & every year if you are not totally sure if they can withstand the winter cold.
Good luck! Hope this helps. :)

Make sure you weed them every other week, water them every other day and once the bloom is gone cut it off. In the Spring, prune them back a little.
