If you use Windows, Paint is a good bmp to jpg converter! You simply load your bmp picture then you click File/Save As and select jpeg as option.

Hope this helps.

A bitmap(bmp) maps each and every pixel of an image, whilst a jpg is a compressed format which does no longer map each and every factor and for this reason loses somewhat some colour and great. you could no longer exchange the surely actuality it incredibly is altered, even a picture interior the beginning up stored as a jpg will do the same, it is the finished factor of the form.

I use Paint Shop Pro 7, It allows me to save any graphics in about 10 or 15 different formats.

I have used it to convert from BMP to JPG, GIF to JPG and other structures.

It also has an Animation program to create animated GIFS

I assume there other quality programs that will do the same out there.

Unfortunately, when you change your photo image from .bmp to .jpg you are compressing the picture. Obviously, you have to determine whether the loss of quality, yet the saving in space on your hard drive warrants using it.

Some photo-editing packages allow you to determine the amount of compression used when saving a .jpg file.

If you take a look at the following page, you'll see that .jpg uses what's called lossy compression. This means that it 'does away' with 'irrelevant' bits of information from the picture/photograph. .Bmp does not use compression, hence the reason why they're so large.

I'd recommend XnView because it's free and easy to use
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Xnview/xnview.html

either click the convert icon or go to tools>batch convert, add your image, select an output directory, a format eg jpg and click go - that's it. Next to the format selection there is a button marked "options" - here you can select the quality - the default is 80% but you can bump it up to 100%. Just remember that if your original image is poor quality your conversion won't be much better.

VSO Image resizer is a more limited tool but also free; to get at the conversion options, click "more"

open the image in paint for quick editing and then save it as jpeg. This does work as I have used this many times. It also works the other way around (Jpeg => bitmap).
