Metallica. Although I'm not a huge fan of metal, I've always found they're music far more accessible than your average metal band. Other great bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Motorhead come pretty close.

Led Zeppelin are considered metal now? Hmmmm. Interesting.
I refuse to pick just one, mainly because my favorite changes so often.
Some of my favorite "metal" bands:
Opeth
Dream Theater
Symphony X
Sonata Arctica
Edge of Sanity
Scar Symmetry
Tool
Metallica - with the exception of St. Anger. I appreciate them trying to keep it fresh by going in a new direction and trying something new, but that album does absolutely nothing for me. The sound of Lars' snare on that monstrosity makes me want to pierce my eardrums.

Metallica are my favourite metal band, I've been a fan of theirs for 21 years,
but recently my tastes have become more extreme, and I listen to more stuff like Lamb of God, Soilwork, God Forbid, Devildriver, Arch Enemy, along with a bit of Testament and Machine Head.

Black Sabbath. Without Ozzy and company you probably don't have a lot of todays metal bands such as Metallica, etc. Sabbath influenced so many of todays bands.

as far as metal only-metallica by a country mile. their albums in the 80's defined the genre.
