What would the value be?? I have tried to clean it but it is still quite tarnished ... it's probably been exposed to the weather for at least 100 years. (found in woods while walking). Any advice??

Interesting find. Did you find it with a metal detector? or just on the ground in the woods. I wouldn't have cleaned the coin because it decreased the value but as long as you didn't damage the coin it shouldn't effect the value much. I am not sure of the value, I collect U.S. coins. If you could find a coin dealer in your area I'm sure he could tell you the current value of your coin it would be smart to take it to more than one coin dealer if you could. well, I hope this helps answer you question.

It is inadvisable to clean your coins as there really isn't a cleaning process that does not damage your coin in some way.

If you absolutely must clean the coin first try soaking it in water and see if any of the gunk will come away. If this doesn't work you can try pure acetone (no scrubbing). Let it soak then rinse with water (preferably distilled).

As to the value of the coin this depends completely on the condition and scarcity of the coin. Without pictures or more information I couldn't tell you.

I would suggest taking it to a coin shop in your area. They should be able to help you with the value.

The only Canadian token dated 1846 is from the Rutherford Brother's Harbour Grace Store. In the condition that you describe the catalog value is $2-3. Since I don't have one, I'd pay $5.

Cents in Canada did not start until 1858, so what you may have is a token. They were made for Upper and Lower Canada due to a lack of small change. There were a great many types made for the Atlantic Maritime's also. You should not have cleaned it for that makes it less valuable. Without knowing what it says on both sides or a scan of both sides I can help you no further.
