It depends on how much money and time you want to put into it. Also, what kind of fish you want to get. The general rule is having 1 gallon of water for every inch your fish are. Like 10 gallons for 10 one-inch like guppies.
I have a ten gallon tank and I love it! You may also want to consider whether you're going to get live-bearers because if you do, you'll end up with a lot of little baby fish if you have male and female fish together.

I would go with AT least a 29 gallon tank when you buy one. Because there easier to take care of and you can get more fish in the tank. And believe me once you start you get hook and it never seems like the tank is big enough Good Luck

a fish tank should always be as big as possible. the only real limit is set by how much weight the floor can support. a filled aquarium with substrate, rocks, roots, floor unit and so on weighs about 1.5 kg per liter capacity (12.5 pounds per gallon) which means that a 300 liters (80 gallon) tank weighs around 450 kg (1000 pounds).

if the adult size of the fish is just an inch or twice you can have a 10-15 gallons, if it is big you can buy a 25+ gallons.

Well, it all varies on the type of fish, and size of, and number of fish you would like to have, i would get between a 10-20 gallon.
Good Luck

Again, it dpends of fish etc. It is best to go to your local aquaria shop and see what fish you would like. Then set up the fish and leave it a week (to start an eco-system) then go back and buy the fish.

Depends on weather it is fresh or salt remember the bigger the aquarium the easier it is to keep the water quality up as long as u have the filtration and at least a 50 gal if you plan on keeping salt

If you want goldfish, get a 30gal for ONE (fancy goldfish)
15gal for each additional one.
If you want guppies, get a 10gal... you could get away with a nicely planted tank with 7 or so guppies
If you want a tetra tank, 10gal would work for cardinals, neons...ect
But, I owuld recomend a 20gal MIN. for most tetras
If you want barbs, a 35-50gal tank for a nice school would be nice :-)
Hope this helps
