If that is a laptop where integrated graphics share 64Mb from system RAM, your option would be to physically add more RAM. If that is a desktop with a graphics expansion slot, just buy a non-Turbocache or non-Hypermemory graphics card. All your system RAM will now be available for your programs.

Notice the difference:
512 - 448 = 64
64 megs of your ram is dedicated to video memory because your video is built into your motherboard. Do you have an old computer with a good video card in it? You can try that. You would have to disable on-board video in your bios. Or, much easier, take out your memory stick and bring it to a computer store. They'll match it for you, and you'll have a whole gig.

No. Some RAM is being used by the operating system or by hardware.

Many computers that have an on-board videocard that's built into the computer chipset use system memory for video. I'll bet that is what is happening.

For example, Intel's 900 series chipset does this:

NO.
You have Shared Video. Your Video Display adapter is using some of the RAM for your display. The best you can do is put in another 512mb stick.

You should have 1gb anyway, XP will work better and Vista requires it.

This is heppen because you have video onboard and it takes memory.

You have now video memory at 64, you can change this in bios, but you better buy a video card(agp)

Nope, memory has to be allocated so from 512 you only get 496MB free. And some memory has to go O/S leaving 448MB. Get it!!!
gd luck.........
