Last thursday, the 2nd August, at about 8.30am on either TV Channel 4 or 5, there was a "breaking news" item broadcast by a lady announcer that said something like " two people were killed and three policemen injured when a van they were tracking blew up! The police were in slow pursuit of a van in the Liverpool area which exploded as they approached it" I waited all day to hear full reports on this dramatic incident fearing another terrorist attack but there has been no follow up of any kind in the press. Did I dream the whole thing? Was it an error by the TV station? Has there been some sort of news blackout? If anyone heard the same thing or can throw any light on the matter I would be most grateful.

I take tour point Isuldurs, but it's a trifle late to try and sweep it under the carpet after it's been mentioned on National TV!

I would suspect a news blackout - the police are probably trying to investigate it and a news investigation would hamper their efforts. you might want to delete this.

Probably a news blackout to prevent a hysterical media frenzy.

Could have been lots of things - I have personal experience of a bloke carrying gas bottles in his van, it's reckoned one was leaking and some tools knocked together, making a spark - result, boom!

Who knows . . .

there has been no news blackout in liverpool, the local paper(liverpool echo) has reported on this story everyday since this happened. yesterdays(3rd aug) gave a full background on the driver, who died later in hospital and 3 policemen who recieved serious burns after a gas cylinder exploded in back of van. i presume terrorist activity has been ruled out and thats why it remains a local interest story instead of a national one.

They ate to many beans and when someone farted, The other person lit a match to make the smell go a way & the van exploded.

There seems to be a lot of that going around. There was a fire in Seattle that got under-reported, too.

It's called journalistic licence. The word "explodes" is more attention grabbing than simply saying "caught fire".
