For the most part I think we try to stay informed but you have to pick through the media garbage when trying to decide between what is real and some reporters opinion. People need to remember that sad as it is, to many events, good or bad, are being used as fodder for the next election.

What "we" learn matters on the channel we choose to get our news from. If you just go off TV, they go for shock factor. Newspapers/magazines usually embrace what ever their owners believe in aka Republican/Democratic/Christian/Anti-oil beliefs. Now the Internet is where to go for wide selection. Someone can subscribe to a newspage that concentrates on good news, news of a certain nation, news on a certain topic (military, human rights, animal rights, political coups, etc), or filter it to the point where they only receive articles with certain keywords.
I admit most are going for the shock factor. Nowadays even mainstream news media is crossing over into tabloid fodder. Come on, see how much coverage Paris got for going to jail!!! How is that front cover headline news compared to the earthquake in Japan that seriously impacted the nuclear plant out there? or even a nobody off the street aka John Doe going to jail for DUI??

Definately they are not informed of world issues. As a canadian who often frequents USA i'm often shocked by the lack of awareness there regarding issues in canada or any major event not directly involving USA. and it only takes about an hour to figure out why. the internation section of news programs and papers is simply a joke. all it generally relates to is US foreign missions. not even to mention the bias in them is obscene.

I'm not American but alot of peaple in my country think that amaricans know nothing about the world..they are involved in their money affairs and their relationships..the media is blinding them and they blieve it..and that what helped their president to make a useless war and sent their youth to die in many places without thinking of the Americans or other people in other countries.

If you take the time you can find out what is going on in the world around you. You just got to look it up yourself and most people don't do that.

You would be surprised that there are Americans that do know. Sorry we don't go around boasting of our great fountain of knowledge of world events.
