ignorance causes people to think these words are okay to use as insults without insinuating anything homophobic, just because they are used so widely. in the same way people will call each other 'pus*y' without realizing that it is actually a chauvinistic and sexually degrading word.
luckily large parts of the gay community have reclaimed words like dyke and fag*ot by calling themselves by those names. because of this it doesn't hurt (as much) when people try to use these words to insult us.
most people are just part of a society that doesn't include the challenges faced by minority groups. this makes them ignorant and makes us stronger as individuals and as a clan.

The person doing this is not sure if you are or not. They are testing the waters to see what your reaction is. Those who protest most aren't those who stay silent are? Mostly they are trying to hurt your feelings. Maybe they are gay and would like to date you. Usually those who protest the loudest are as they accuse others. Just ignore the ignorant.

most of the time we dislike in others that which we most dislike about ourselves...they are simply projecting their fears onto you.
