Have picked another era to have lived in? I am not saying that all era's didnt have their problems but don't you think that the violence which we see now is at times unbearable? Or is it a case of, the violence has always been here, but they didnt have the means to broadcast it and most families kept themselves to themselves regarding things such as domestic abuse ect?

It seems though that way back , family values were so much more important, and that people looked out for their own. There was a sense of community where as now, alot of folk dont even know their neighbours....

Jonathan, is ignorance bliss? Re the net and all this technology,is this making it harder for us to think? Do we not own our own minds anymore? Are we swayed by the media?

Karol, I certainly do appreciate life and old age, My Dad is lying in a hospital bed having been in intensive care due to a silly fall and will never be the same again. I certainly do appreciate life. I think thats a good point.

Every era of human history has its madness and hardships--- its blessings and beauty !!
However, for me, with all of the insanity and chaos -- there could be no other time that I would have preferred to live -- these ARE the most interesting OF times !!
The nature of media--simply stated-- is to perpetuate an attitude OF fear and expedience OF circumstance -- this is what keeps people tuning into these sources -- to keep abreast of exactly HOW serious it all is !! They, in a lot of cases are catalysts OF dire circumstance by the simple notion of them being the messenger FOR so many violent and caustic elements !!
It was once explained to me, by a very wise and knowledgable professor of human history --- that the clock of human history ran by way of a pendulum that swung evenly from side to side --- at one end there is a particular reality in play --- but with time -- the pendulum swung to the other side and another completely opposite reality was at hand --- for instance --- a social system based on major core of family values and strict adherence to religious morals etc --- and then, a society with no base being placed on family nearly as much as the institutions that are responsible for "raising" the children -- and a complete rejection of things religious by the system -- such things being classified as "invalid" to social order !!
What we are experiencing of late is a product of the society having a major turning away from God --- we have taken Him away from our children (prayer in schools being a direct action -- and removal of all references to Him as being the covert by-product) -- and now we sit back and listen to the "experts" wondering why there are so many godless children !! Absolutely amazing !!
We, as a people, simply never learn !!
We are wise in book knowledge
and ignorant as dirt within our soul !!

Perhaps a lot of folk don't know their neighbours because life is different now, people come and go and work longer hours, they don't necessarily have time to spend with the neighbours. Besides, the guy next door could be a Mr Christie.
I think it's just the media that's opened our eyes to the horrors of the world, they dwell on that rather than the good things we used to read about in magazines and journals. The political situation has been unstable in the Middle East for hundreds of years, there was terrible poverty all around the world even while we had the British Empire, but of course us Brits just took it as part of every day life. At least now nearly everybody can afford to have a TV and broadband internet, and not be starving in the gutter.
I think I'd like to see what the world is like 100 years from now, and if we survive the impending meteor / super volcano / flood / draught.

If I picked an era other than this, it would have to be earlier, and I would be either very old, or more likely dead.
Communication is going to get better, unless there is a war to wipe it all out.
There has always been violence, but I look towards all the people who are not violent, who are respectful, there are far more of them, the violent ones are in a minority.
Todays world, with phones radio, television, the internet, and the things to do outside, the trees, the weather, the people, it's a great time to be alive.
I am glad to be alive in this time.

No. This one is good for me. It's basically the end of the world LIVE. Another era wouldn't get anything like the drama of entire nations literally disappearing under water, natural disasters of unparalleled magnitude, the rise of hitherto tinpot dictatorships into world powers, the fall of the USA and the coming invasion of Australia. (Yeah, I just made that up)Sure, in the past we've seen World Wars which were for many the end of civilization, But the problem for me is not so much the violence as the overcrowding of the planet.

Violence...domestic and otherwise...has always been around us. As you mentioned, we simply have the means to make it more public now. I do agree, however, that family values are declining...maybe not an all-time low, but certainly the lowest they've been in a long time. All that being said, I wouldn't pick another era to live in...there's some pretty remarkable things happening around us as well.

Violent crime dropped during the 90s. Not just little drop, but big drop. If you read that book Freakonomics they got interesting explanation for that peculiar drop in crimes. Terrorism is still very rare event in this country. I really don't know if I'd pick another era. Especially considering it wasn't that long ago when we had segregated society. There are problems, but there never have been better era to fight those problems like we can do now.

Try and live in an era when there were no police. you had to defend everything you had 24/7 never noing that you might die that day protecting your worldy goods. today is not much better but at least we have some form of justice system...
all we can do is to live a life free of crime and to be nice to each other, wow! what a thouhgt!!!

Another era would be the country side in Edwardian England. Industry and modern forward thinking had arrived, but some pockets were still at the relaxed horse and buggy stage.

From the stories my grandmother used to tell
me,having been passed down from her grandparents, life still had it's many problems.
The only difference then, there was not the media coverage,so it was not all tranquil, but
you did not get to hear about it.
I'm getting on in years and I don't think I would
have like to live my life during any other era.
It is a true saying, life is what you make of it,
dealing with the circumstances to which you
were born
