So that people can't lift it off, some people get so upset at funerals they may want to open it. Also if the lid wasn;t nailed on, one of the pallbearers may fall whilst carrying it and the lid may fall off and the corpse may even fall out!!! It's for safety purposes I suppose!!!

I live in Greece and they have open coffins at funerals, in fact I don'think they nail the lid on for burial, they just place it on. I ave told my husband that if I have an open coffin I want him to make sure my mouth is open to look like I'm laughing, give everyone a fright when they look in!!!! I like to have the last laugh.

And why don't they put a crowbar in with the deceased? When the trumpet sounds, they might be stuck.
