Laugh at them? Omgosh NO WAY!!!! I have worked with people, in wheelchairs, and helped them in anyway I can, laugh at them but you know, some people do, and they just do not even know what it is or would be like ya know? Just because they are in a wheelchair?!!! Does not mean they are not normal, they are some of the most loveliest people in the world, and YES, if I can help them, I do so, but some, do not want help, so I say ok, and smile,,,,,but it is hard on them. I have never been in a wheelchair, but, let me tell you, it is harder on them, then anyone, except the Good Lord, could ever know!
Yes I do feel for them, but Im not going to sit there, and treat them like babies, specially if they are older, or even mid age, young adults, etc...as I (say I see someone, in a wheelchair, trying to get into a door, I just smile, and open it for them, they smile, from ear to ear, back at me, and that is what this world should do for people with handicaps, and as for that word, most of them, do not think of them as handicaps, people, they just go on about their day, sure they hate it, but hey, whatever happened to them, as I have talked to a lot of them,
they are just so happy to be able to get around, drive, etc.
It is a really super thing to me, and I have had a lot of freinds,
in wheelchairs, and they go on, because they know they have to, and also, it depends, on, how much they can do, but most, they can do most everything!!!!!
Sorry got on a role, but as far as I am concerned, you should not, ever just stare at them, or DEFINATLY NOT BE MEAN TO THEM, come on,,,,,
They are humans just like all of us, and well sure, I wonder what it would be like to be them, but then I see them, have seen so many, and known so many, (as freinds) and they just keep on trucking, and that is so neat!!!!!!
Hope this helped, n if you are in a wheelchair, baby, keep on trucking, because "YOU ARE SOME ONE,,,AND ALWAYS WILL BE!!!!" OK?!!!!!! Thanks for letting me ramble n share my thoughts with you, and have a great day! Always!!!!!!!!!

I usually feel sorry for the person and I always wonder if it is permanent or just temporary.

When my mother got ill (she was older); she could walk some but when we went places I sometimes took a wheelchair. Because if you don't know where a place is and then park at the wrong door, you can end up walking a lot. When I had her in a wheelchair, people always opened doors for us and offered help.

Well, when I see someone in a wheelchair who's close by, I usually move out of the way for them. Then again, I do that for anyone who wants to move past me... *shrugs* Personally, I believe that they are as capable of opening their own doors as anyone else, and there ARE some people in wheelchairs who would feel angry if they were treated as anything less than a person with two functioning legs, so I just leave them alone (as to not offend them) UNLESS they clearly need or would appreciate some help.

1. I do wonder what happened... I wonder if they fought for our freedom or the freedom of others, complete strangers and wound up needing a wheelchair because of it. I also wonder if we, the strangers they fought for, have all but abandonded them.

2. Yes, I do wonder what it's like to be them.. I do wonder what it's like trying to function in a world made for people not in a wheelchair. I wonder what it's like... yes I do.

3. No, I don't laugh or make fun of anyone ever. No matter what their circumstance. Not ever.

4. Anyone that seems to be struggling with anything, I offer my assistance, wheelchair or no.

5. I never feel sorry for anyone, I don't offer my pity to anyone, for any reason. I offer my friendship, my respect, and my love.. I would never want pity. Pity is, in my opinion, the lowest insult to someones very being.

You said I didn't have to answer each question, but I felt like they were valid questions and worth answering.

Peace...

Personally, I just ignore the fact that they're in a wheelchair. I mean, if I were in a wheelchair, I wouldn't want anyone to feel sorry for me...it's not like I'm less of a person because of this minor disability. Whenever I see anyone in a wheelchair, I's always open a door for them, but that's about it. If they wanted me to do something else, then I would; otherwise, no.

Also, I think that they have pretty strong arms...

I take care of 6 people who are in wheelchairs. All of them with varying degrees of mental retardation. I would never make fun of them. Oddly enough I don't feel sorry for them either. For them it is all they know so it is normal.

I feel sorry for them, because I was in a wheelchair for 4 months myself, its really difficult to maneuver in a wheelchair, & their not comfy at all.

Can't help but feel sorry for them. I know if I were them I would miss things like walking and running only because I am so active.

for me, i guess i feel bad for them because being able to walk gives you so much more freedom.

and anyone who laughs or makes fun of someone with a disability is just cruel.

i wonder how must it feel, and how difficult it must be for them... but i treat them rather normally like i would treat anyone else and i try to avoid looking at them strangely or with pitty because it hurts them...

i once valunteered to help raise money back home for disabled kids and i met and interacted with many of them... i discovered how able they really are, and how disabled can we be when dealing with them or even with our life problems... that was the most wonderful and leaning experience for me in my life and i'm dying to repeat it...! thanx... love you all
