I'm moving there for a couple of years and need a laptop for work. I have three options: buy one in the UK and take it over, buy one over there, or buy one in the tax free bit of the airport. I just wondered how good the prices are, because for a lot of stuff they're no better than high street. Ta

My recommendation is not to buy at the airport. The whole "Duty Free" label is completely obsolete in this country.

You should rather go to the shops in town. One option is the Computer Souq in Bur Dubai, located between Khaleej Centre (eastern end of Mankhool Street) and the Creek. You will have to bargain there and can get a huge discount if you have enough time. You might need to be knowledgable about computers if you want to be sure about the quality and the built of the computer you are buying there.

The other alternative are shops with large computer departments such as DJ Sharaf (latest opening: Sheikh Zayed Road) or the different Carrefour supermarkets.

My personal experience tells me that In the end, computers in Dubai are not always cheaper than in some European countries for example. Do not forget that you might have to invest some extra money for the software or hardware you might need. Also the keyboard layout tends to be in Arabic and English which can be somewhat confusing...

Both Dell and Toshiba are the best right now. Most members in the family have either one of the other for work use. You need to be sure to buy from reputable places. Prices vary. One very important thing is to make sure you can get the right services over there for it when you buy it here. It really isn't about where to buy but rather about services for it if you ever require the, unless you expect to travel a lot and thus make use of services here. People always say though buying here is best. I suggest you visit a couple of places before coming to a final decision about which one to get and where. Take a look at Plug In or even Carrefour stores too. key boards are not a problem as you can buy in English if you want too.

I will try to answer you based on my experience with Dubai, NY, Dallas, Philly, Michigan, LA, etc. Buy the perfumes at Dubai Duty Free Shops. They are cheaper there compared to US. For chocolates, have it purchased in the US. The price is almost the same but the choices are more in the US than in the Duty Free Shop. I would recommend that you purchase the Dates Filled Chocolate at the Dubai Duty Free. They are unique to GCC only and you wont find them in the US. My american friends in Buffalo, New York love it.

Duty free is not the cheapest place as it used to be. In the old times, the duty was 12% therefore Dubai duty free was a cheaper place. Now customs was lowered to 5% only. Outside, in the city center or Carrefour, you might find much better offers with discount much exceeding the 5% customs difference.

Never buy from UK...too expensive compared to prices in UAE...You can either go to CompuMe, Plug Ins or Al Ain Center (great bargins) and it's located near Bur Juman Center...All of these are located in Dubai (links are provided below). Call the information on 181/185 to get the contact number of Al Ain Center (remember, it's in Dubai) :P

Good Luck

Shop around in Dubai - good advice on where to go already given by others before me.
Only advice I will give is befriend a Local first and then get them to get on your behalf as they know how to barter and get a better deal for you.
Enjoy your new life in Dubai, great place, nice people, good life style ( BE PREPARED FOR TRAFFIC JAMS FROM HELL )
