He is not superior he only wears different clothes.
Here where I live it is with woman following way: They wear heavy Make-Up and high heels and the hair looks as if they just came from the hairdresser. Due to that outfit there is often the flair of being higher then others, for a reason I do not really understand. I am myself a professional, and at the start I was almost "ashamed" to wear elegant clothing as it seemed unfair to the cleaning lady, who was in my point of view also very important.
As my work has to do with dealing with problems people have, I cannot afford to feel superior as I would be useless for them.
There is no difference between professionals and other skilled workers. Only the clothes. I truly see no difference between both, at least I can`t, as I know too many professionals and too many other skilled wage earners. People are in their heart very similar, be they professionals or just a street worker.

Professionals are not superior to any other skilled worker, but they are held to higher and stricter standards.
A professional undergoes a lot of training for the job; sometimes years. A professional, at least a smart professional, carries liability or malpractice insurance, since professionals are not supposed to make mistakes.
Professionals are almost always licensed in the states where they work, and have to pass testing in their areas of expertise. Professionals are subject to losing their licenses for misconduct on the job and sometimes even off the job.

A "Professional" has went the extra mile and got the education to know the ins and outs about the job, so they are being paid for what they know not so much as what they do. Had you went to school for that same job you would be making the same as he does, so why complain? One day something will happen and only he will know what to do and you will be glad he knows and has the education to maybe save your life, isn't it worth a few extra dollars to have a professional on the job? I think so.

They generally have invested quite a bit of time and money into learning more and more about less and less... making them specialists in very little, therefore it earns the big bucks.

because if you call yourself a professional it means by virtue of the term that you are offering a commitment. (to profess your commitment to the occupation)
of course it is also a euphemism for prostitution. maybe that's it?
