Whenever I fill up my gas tank, about 5 miles into the new tank, my car begins to buck and jerk around...it feels as if I were just pushing in the clutch over and over again...much like when someone is first learning to drive stick. In addition, when i stop and allow the car to idle, the rpms will drop and the car will stall. This only happens when I fill up the tank and after I put about 15-20 miles on the fresh tank, the bucking and the stalling stops and the car performs well.
One other interesting piece of information... there seems to be no pressure in the gas tank. When i remove the cap, I do not hear the pssssh sound of the air being released.
My mechanic is puzzled but believes the problem may be with the EGR valve. The car passed the California SMOG test just over two weeks ago. If the EGR valve was the problem would it still pass?
As always, any help would be appreciated!

Most likely the purge valve is faulty and allowing gas to flow directly into the engine partially flooding it. When you fill up the tank, stop after the first click. If you keep filling up the tank after the vent valve shuts off the pump, you risk flooding the fuel vapor lines that lead to the engine and extra gas may get sucked into the engine causing bucking, hesitation and possibly stalling. The lines from the purge valve lead straight from the tank to the canister on the passenger's side of the engine bay to the engine to burn fuel vapors in the gas tank while cruising for emissions purposes. I suggested purge valve fault (or fuel tank vapor system fault) due to the symptoms occurring at fill up.

A bad egr can easily be checked by a mazda / ford ids scan tool - if it sticks, then it needs to be replaced. Also the egr has nothing to do with the fuel tank and egr problems would occur at any time - not just after a fill up. pinch off the purge valve hose and test when you fill up to do a quick test.
Also try to remove the canister (located on the passenger's side of the engine bay) and see if it feels heavy - it should be fairly light - if it is heavy when the symptoms occur, then it is definitely filled with gas (it shouldn't be normally). Try that first, this is a free way to test versus a $250 guess.

It has the symptoms of a faulty egr valve, but they don't just go haywire then repair themselves when the gas tank emties a little.
It sounds like vapor lock. If the design of your tank prohibits air from entering the tank at the fuel cap when it's overfilled, the gas will only flow at a minimal rate and cause the car to starve for fuel. It's the same as holding your finger over the top a straw and lifting it out of a glass of liquid.
You say it performs well when the gas level drops a bit? I would go ahead and get a new gas cap and try not filling your tank up all the way.

EGR should have nothing to do with filling the tank. Try just pulling the gas cap then reinstalling. If nothing, don't fill tank all the way next time you fill car. If still no problem, then is probably from fuel getting into the purge system and causing a rich mixture.

in the beginning, the "gasoline" pedal on a gasoline injected automobile is a misnomer. it incredibly is an accelerator pedal, yet what it incredibly does is in basic terms to function AIR to the gasoline that has already been injected. in case you could upload greater "air" to maintain the engine working, then you certainly've a gasoline blend difficulty, probably from the mixture administration unit or a vacuum leak interior the attaching air snorkel. you could surely eliminate and sparkling the EGR (Exhaust gasoline recirculation) valve with suited wrenches. it incredibly is sole purpose is to blend warmer exhaust gasoline from the exhaust manifold with the incoming air value to advance the burning of gasoline for emission administration purposes. it incredibly is vacuum activated via greater engine speeds and would jam open from an over abundance of carbon contemporary interior the exhaust. it incredibly is incredibly useful to envision the operation of your PCV valve and it incredibly is hoses for the presence of a vacuum leak, which wuold dramatically influence the ability and MPG's. examine your difficulty codes at an vehicle Zone or resembling be certain if any of your sensors are on the fritz. additionally, specially, examine that your engine is achieving well-known working temperature and that the temp sensor is incredibly immersed interior the coolant. in case your coolant is low, it would not sign the pc to lean out the gasoline/air ratio. a competent thank you to envision for vacuum leaks is to bypass to a do-it your self automobile wash and shampoo the finished engine bay with the motor working. Any undesirable plug wires or leaks interior the vacuum device could show up now. If I have been you i'd exchange the plugs and put in some Bosch Platinum plugs and cork up the vacuum line that runs on your EGR valve thoroughly. It basically creates greater desirable undesirable carbon build-up on your intake manifold, anyhow. a radical Gum-out rinse is noted as for.

I would get a new gas cap. If that doesn't do it, then have the EVAP system checked. If your gas tank isn't sealed, it will cause the car to run badly sometimes.
