Yes, co-op housing societies are pretty much communist in nature. They make the rules and you live with them.

Most co-ops and condo complexes have this rule in effect to prevent the property from losing the uniformity of the complex. All the units have to maintain the same outward appearance. If you were to add a window it would modify the outward appearance. You may own the house but they control how the outside looks while you live in it. Sorry, That`s how it works. You can do all most anything you want inside, as long as it doesn`t affect the actual structure of the unit

yes they have the right. co-ops are generally ruled by the folks living in them. they make the rules in accordance to how the majority votes.
the co-op attitude generally is 'one for all and all for one'. they try to be self sufficient and live within their means and budget and if that makes them 'communist' so be it!
and making exterior structural changes is a huge thing. allowing just anyone to start chopping through walls and putting in windows or doors is risky. some co-ops will allow this type of thing if professionally drawn up plans are submitted and if a professional contractor does the job. but allowing any member to start hacking away at their home? no way!
presumably you moved in with a co-operative attitude and didn't expect to just use the system. the rules are always explained clearly to everyone prior to accepting them as members but don't forget, if you can't live with the rules as well as the many benefits then give your notice and move out! i am sure they have a long waiting list of people who will be happy to take your place. and with your attitude i doubt they will miss you!

Co-operative Societies are not a good friend while taking loans, but while depositing they are good to a great extent. This is seen in the present time of co-op. administration. Regarding transfer fee - if the house ownership is transferred, they should not charge anything from the loanee in that particular account under any Law.

If you belong to this society you signed a contract that clearly states what changes can be made to the property, its more or less a contract stating changes to the appearance of your home must be approved. Unfortunately a contract is a contract I don't see any legal recourse.

If it's going to change the outward look of the structure they may be able to stop you. Appeal to them and show them your plans. maybe they're just arrogant that you didn't consult them first.
Other then this, bring your case to an attorney, let him read the lease and see if they're right, maybe they've overlooked something.
