Typhoon Ike which struck the Philippines in September 1984 was the strongest for which there are accurate records. It's probable that there were stronger ones before records were kept.

Ike killed over 4,000 people and left one million homeless.

There was another typhoon in 2004 (can't remember the name) which was very strong but not quite as strong as Ike and fortunately it didn't cause as much damage.

Due to the overwhelming number of dead bodies everywhere, there was a shortage of coffins, so authorities opted to collect the dead through dump trucks and buried in mass graves. It was considered the deadliest natural disaster of the country.
