There may be some yellow-orange color to it.
It is the same as when making a cake.
Take your cheese grater, look for the side with tiny open squares, close together. Hold the grater over a plate or bowl.

Use whole washed oranges.
holding the orange in one hand, and the grater in the other,
give 3 or 4 gentle strokes across those little grater squares.
Turn your orange in your hand, continuing with gentle strokes until you have scraped off most of the COLORED surface.
(Avoid scraping the white underneath portion of the skin - as it is bitter)

As your grater becomes clogged, you can lightly tap it on the bowl, then, with a toothpick, slide it between the grates. It is a time consuming process, but this is a very delicate material you are harvesting. About a dozen oranges should give, maybe 1 to 2 teaspoons of "orange zest"

You can still juice or eat the oranges, they are best eaten that day.

By steam distillation. You'll have to do a bit of a google search on how to do this. Very simple process requiring a bit of high school chemistry knowledge ;-)

In basic terms, you'll put your peel in a vessel, mix with water then distill the mixture through a condenser (basic high school chemistry). The condensed liquid you collect at the other end will be a mixture of water with the orange peel oil floating on top. Then it's a simple matter of draining off the water to leave you with the pure oil.

Hope this helps.........

It's easier to buy it! You can get pure orange oil extract at some health food stores.
