Philanthropist is the first word that came to mind but here are some other options...benefactor, donor, altruist, patron, humanitarian, sponsor. Besides philanthropist...I like humanitarian the best!

There is a word for those who give large gifts, but also get their picture in the paper a lot and have streets named after them, whose ego trips are larger than the moon, and are still living. But I don't know it offhand.
