It's certainly possible that the length of the answer directly contributes to choosing the best answer, but I also think the length of individual words within the answer can play an additional role. In reality, the answer may just SEEM to be longer when in fact, by word count, the answerer may simply have relied on words that contain more letters to give the appearance of a longer answer.

I think it's because many times the longer answers explain. Anyone could say "yes" or "no". It's best to explain your answer. Didn't you learn anything in high school?

i guess they figure that the person who wrote a longer answer put more work into it, or that they give a more detailed answer. but simplicity is good too, isn't it?
