Every year on I-29 North in Northwest Missouri, there are hundreds of cyclists heading up that way to the rally..I enjoy watching them, but I always wonder what keeps them going back....

the point is, I want to understand......That is why I am asking...yeah, maybe someday I might venture there, but until then, I like to know the reason why others find it so interesting to be there every year.

The Sturgis, S.D. Black Hills Rally is considered the "mecca" of motorcycle rallies. It started out as motorcycle races and has become the largest motorcycle event in the world. If it can be done, its done at Sturgis. 24 hr a day parties for a solid week, thousands of bikes, lots of celebrities, some of the hottest bands and live entertainment ini the country, not to mention some of the most beautiful sightseeing from a biker standpoint in the country.
(not to mention all the nudity in the big campgrounds)!!! LOL

I'm 58 years old, been riding since I was 20, and been to several bike rallies. After a while you begin to realize that it's a lot of fuss for nothing. When you first get to one it's exciting for about an hour. The sheer number of bikes in one place is overwhelming. Then the feeling goes away. You might watch some demos' and some t-shirt contests but by then you're bored. You then ride around the country awhile and then you realize you're lost cause you don't know the roads or where to go. After a day you are wishing you had stayed home. I've been to Daytona, Laconia, and Myrtle Beach. Have no desire to ever do another biker ball again. But I would not have missed doing at least one.

I went a few years back when I was visiting the USA, and even though it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I did have a relatively good time, if I was over there again, I would not bother going again. It attracts too many Trailer Queens (woosies that tow their bike there behind a huge winnebago and cause huge traffic jams with them) and wannabe posers that think just because they ride a harley (or in some cases just own a crap load of harley paraphenalia, like T-shirts, belt buckles etc, but dont actually own a Harley) that they are suddenly a big bad-*** biker and run around acting like complete jerks. Dont get me wrong I also met some great people there and also a handful of genuine bikers, but unfortunately they are few and far between. Nevertheless My suggestion to you would be to go and see for yourself, you might like it and become a devotee, and if so, more power to ya, its just not my scene thats all.

Personally, I think it is way overated - went there once, and had no desire to ever go back. It reminded me of a huge Village People look-alike contest. It you enjoy the freak show at the Circus - you'd be right at home there.
I prefer going to places like Daytona Bike Week, which has similar attendance levels each year, but where they actually have AMA and AHRMA sanctioned motorcycling racing - what the purpose of these events was in the first place. Other events that are more fun are AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, The Hoot, and Americade.
Sturgis, Daytona, and Myrtle Beach all have WAY to many people carrying their bikes on trailers instead of actually riding them - the bunch of woosies.

I am 64, my wife is 55, we go every year, we enjoy seeing all the people, all the bikes, riding in the black hills and relaxing with a few friends and downing a few beers, We ride our motorcycles, camp, in a tent and enjoy that everyone there likes motorcycles, but aren't all bikers, not that it is a bad thing, we just love motorcycles and people that share that.

The hype is there are so many bikes there. You see things there you won't see anywhere else. It's just the biggest biker party in the world and everyone wants to go just to say they've been to Sturgis and it's set in the Black Hills of South Dakota. That's got to be an awesome setting. Never been there myself but one day I'll get there.

I don't mean this as a put down, but if you have to ask, you would never understand.
Try going one year, you'll have a blast, and understand the draw.
