In the event that two teams are tied for the wildcard berth, there is a one game playoff (home field determined some weeks in advance by coin flip). This was the case in the NL in 1998 (Chicago defeated San Francisco) and 1999 (New York defeated Cincinnati).
If three or more teams are tied, there are various plans for a two or three game playoff. This scenario has never yet happened in MLB.
If two teams are tied for the division championship, and either would qualify as the wildcard team, no tiebreaker game is played. An existing checklist of tiebreaker comparisons is used until the tie is broken (head-to-head record is, IIRC, the first item on the list). This was the case in the NL in 2001 when Houston and St. Louis finished with 93-69 records, both better than the second-place teams in the East and West divisions. Houston was awarded the Central championship by virtue of whatever tiebreaker it won (pretty sure it was H2H) and St. Louis was awarded the wildcard berth.
A similar situation arose in the 1996 NL West, where the Padres and Dodgers were both assured of a postseason berth heading into the final weekend, where they met in Los Angeles. Observers noted that what should have been an intense closing weekend was actually a rather dull affair, since there was little at stake. The Pods won the division by a game over the Dodgers, but no one was much overjoyed or upset by this outcome, because both teams had a ticket to October already punched.

In the event of a tie in the standings at the close of the regular season, league rules provide for a one-game playoff (with the home field determined by coin flip) to determine which of two teams participate in the Division Series. If three teams are involved in a tie, a two-game playoff may be played. If two teams are tied, but a tiebreaker would result in both participating in the Division Series anyway (due to one being division champion and the other being wild card), then no playoff is played and seedings are determined by head-to-head record.

A one-game playoff will be held for the wildcard spot. Home team will be chosen by a coin-flip.
