The other night i went to turn on my 2000 honda civic and noticed that the rpms kept going up and down from 1 to about 2.5 and it wouldnt stop. I left the car on for about 5 mins still going. I popped the hood and noticed that there was a lil smoke coming out from around the headers, so i shut it off. the next morning i went out and checked my fluids and i saw tat there was low engine coolant so i put some in turned the car on it was fine. it ran fine for about 2 days and did the same thing yesterday. i checked the fluids everthing was good. i went back to check on the car the next day and the rpm going up and down had stopped but i had a check engine light. Any ideas??

You probably got a vacuum leak or a sensor out. You can rent a scan tool for free at most auto part stores. All you need is a deposit. Once you pull the code and find out what it means, you can start looking in that area for loose connectors or bad sensors

sounds like you have a bit of a coolant leak, but the question is where is it going. it could go to the ground from many point of interest, it could go inside the car from a ruptured heater core, or it could go to the inside of the engine from a blown head gasket, cracked block, or a cracked head. is the oil a milky color, or do you see a lot of white smoke coming out of th tail pipe?

well if smoke was coming from your heads i think that means your car is running lean so it is running hot. it could also be fuel pump, fuel filter or fuel injectors. it might be your computer engine management system it could also be your mass air flow sensor, early ignition timing your computer might be spraying the wrong amount of fuel. So i would check fuel pump, fuel injectors, fuel filter, ems computer, mass air flow sensor, timing or computer spraying wrong fuel
