It's been going on for a couple hours, I stepped out to take a look, it scares me, I have got goosebumps nonstop all night. Any idea what is causing the lightning to stick around?

Sometimes lightning does stick around for a long time in much the same way that it can rain or snow for a long time.

If the clouds that are generating the lightning aren't been blown along then the storm can remain over the same piece of land until it wears itself out.

The number of lightning strikes and length of the storm is determined by a series of events taking place up in the atmosphere. Given the right conditions a lightning storm can last for many hours and although there can be a lot of turbulence and activity within the storm itself it can be quite calm beyond the boundaries of the storm.
