This is an example of an INELASTIC collision. Momentum is conserved. Before the collision the system momentum is 100kg*2m/s - 80kg*3m/s = -40kg*m/s The negative sign is the opposite of the linebacker's direction (which I took to be positive). The momentum after must be the same, -40kg*m/s, which means the final velocity of the two players will be 40/180 = -0.22m/s, or 0.22m/s in the direction of the halfback.

It's a trick question. Football players are measured in pounds and they move in feet and inches. You must be talking about soccer players.
