I am trying to set up a static IP address and I have a Smark Link 56K High Speed Modem. I realize this is almost impossible to set up a static IP address or port forward, through the NAT router/modem, I'm positive it's a modem as the default gateway and IP address are always the same. However, everyone always tells me to program the router because I don't have one, I was wondering if I was to buy a router tomorrow, would what I'm trying to do work? For one thing, I'm connected through my work so I have no control over the connection. That's why I'm wondering compatability?? Also I have a Windows XP home edition. would that be a factor, if you think purchasing a router would help, could you give me info on the best kind for my situation? How would I program it if it did work?? any possible info you can give me would greatly help. Thanks.

Its not your choice. Inside your LAN you can choose what your IP will be, however the modem56k high speed (no, actually low speed) will decide for you. They either use static or dynamic. I myself am trying to figure out why you would want to do this. Even if you do buy a router, like i said you can tell the router what you want. However your IP changes to what the 56k modem gives you once it leaves the work/office, out into the real world.

Your IP address is the external one and is Static ,and it never changes, you can not change it or change your gateway or subnet mask ,this is external IP gave you by your ISP(Internet Service Provider) ,you must have a router to get more IP addresses which they are all INTERNAL
IP addresses, when you get DHCP through your router, it will provide you with many internal ip addresses(about 200+) mostly it start with 192.168.1.1 usually by default it becomes your new gateway ,even if you have that.. still your external IP addresses stays the same if someone wants to locate you from outside , or if you send email or login to other sites ...just think of it like an office with one phone number and so many extensions. In that case you can chose any of those ip's and set is as static ip for your pc.
Good luck

Using a 56k modem you can not get a staitc IP address, these are only available on subscribed broadband connections, and your modem is only an analogue line modem. You would then need to subscribe to a a fixed address as an extra. If you make any attempt to change your public Ip address, not only will your connection die, but your ISP may cut you off for illegal use of your connection.

Try going to Google or Wikipedia and looking up Dynamic DNS. Dynamic DNS will let you associate a URL with your PC and keeps track of it's changing dynamic IP address. DynDNS is free for a minimal service that satisfies most people.
