It will never be the most famous sport. Non Americans will always favour soccer (football) and Americans will always favor their "football".
But tennis is a very popular sport, nonetheless.

I do not think Tennis will ever become a famous sport just like Soccer. The main reason being tennis is an individual sport or at best two player team in doubles. Hardly tennis is watched when doubles are played. In order for any individual
sport to be famous, there needs to be a tendency that the
player of that country needs to win and win big. Just like
Federer doing it currently and often there is a doubt that
Nadal may beat him. I specutlate that both in Swiss and
Spain when these two play, it may get some attention. But
still this is not enough to get a large fan base like in Soccer.
Even though the sport is played almost all over the world,
but has a very focused fan base.
Soccer takes most of the fans, which means the entire S.
American continent is out. In US, unless the top seed is
an American it will never be watched in large numbers, even
if all finals were Americans. Same thing goes in Asia and
Aussie land. Euro has some but not large enough.
So the bottom line is Tennis will never be a famous sport or
come even close to Soccer or even Basketball or Cricket.

First of all, I love playing tennis - but it wasn't something I just looked at and said "oh, that would be fun", it just kind of grew on me after years of watching it. It doesn't exactly look "fun," just quiet and intense - perhaps boring.
Today however, tennis is getting more famous and more attention than ever, due to the increased level of play (speed, power, accuracy) and also to the players who advertise the sport as well as play it by other means (ie: Maria Sharapova and her modeling). Ever since the sport was invented it has been the top choice of gaming for the "aristocrats" as one person mentioned. The thing is tennis isn't a pick-up sport such as soccer, football, or basketball. These sports require skill too but have no need for excess equipment like a tennis court or a racket to learn how to play. Many countries don't have the money or space to build tennis courts and don't have enough people that would pay to go use them. While the idea that tennis may become the most popular sport in the US isn't impossible (though far-fetched), the idea that it will become the #1 sport in the world might as well be.

Tennis is known as the sport , loved by the aristocracy. It's becoming more and more famous , even people who dislike it know who Federrer or Sharapova is.The so called tennis-fashion also has a very big contribution.I think that in a few decades tennis would definately become the most famous and practiced sport.

I wish that time would come soon ...... but I am afraid it does not seem to be a very probable possibility at the said time.Though tennis is extremely popular , its popularity scale is nowhere near cricket's , or soccer's or football or basketball or baseball. These sports are team sports which always are more popular and these sports have already establishes too good a hold in order to lose out to tennis .

Define famous.
If you mean awareness of the sport, then I think tennis is famous since it's one of the global sports (i.e. players come from all over the world).
If you mean ability of the public to tell who tennis players are, then that is slowly changing given Federer's dominance (putting him alongside Tiger as greatest athletes of their time), the enigma of the Williams sisters, and the commercial appeal of Sharapova.
Tennis' popularity depends on where on this world you are. If you live in America, chances are tennis is not that big. However, if you live in Spain or in Argentina, tennis is probably second only to futbol in terms of popularity.

The reason tennis is not as popular as soccer or football or basketball is because people can't wager on tennis. People like to bet on sport and it's always more fun to bet on team sport than individual sport except maybe boxing.
