That depends on what you mean by the last man on the Moon.

In December 1972 Apollo 17 took Eugene Cernan and Jack Schmitt to the Taurus-Littrow valley on the Moon. As commander, Eugene Cernan stepped out first, followed by jack Schmitt a little later. At the end of the mission, Jack Schmitt climbed back into the Lm first, followed by Gene Cernan.

So, either one of them could be considered the last man on the Moon. Schmitt was the last man to set foot there, while Cernan was the last man to leave the surface.

Everyone knows the name of the first man on the moon, but what about the last? Eugene Cernan left the final bootprint that may ever appear on the surface of our dusty satellite. Yet Cernan has been heralded for far more than this milestone. He is not only one of the most accomplished of the astronauts—he journeyed into space three times, on Gemini 9, Apollo 10, and Apollo 17—but one of the most eloquent in describing his otherworldly experiences. Below, join him as he lifts off, walks in space, lands and walks on the moon, and reenters Earth's atmosphere. From the book The Last Man on the Moon. Copyright 1999 by Eugene Cernan and Don Davis. There has never been a man on the moon. The moon landings were faked.
