I think something had to be done. I disagree with just about every law that passes, its always less than what it should be because they have to change so much to get it to pass through Congress, but I still think that something had to be done to help stop terrorism. In a perfect world we would have just enforced the laws we already had under previous presidents, but look at how that turned out.
Its sad that they had to legislate common sense in our law enforcement and airport security... the Patriot Act is trying to legislate the things that had to be done. For that I commend the people who wrote and passed it.
I disapprove of the facts that 1) it even needed to be written (why can't we just tighten security without more laws forcing it?) and 2) that it had to be passed in such a way that leaves it so open to attack from critics.

The Patriot Act has been responsible for the prevention of several terror attacks on the U.S. The Sears Tower, The Golden Gate Bridge and more. The argument that it violates your right to privacy or allows the Government to listen in to your phone calls, as yet I have not heard of one person that has had this happen other than those that wish us harm. It is easier for a local Police Department to get a search warrant for your home from an anonymous tip than it is for federal law enforcement to invoke the Act.

Nope, we have dozens of laws on the books that were passed pre 9/11. if they were only enforced, many of the 9/11 terrorists wouldn't have had a chance to carry out their deed. It is feel good legislation that pats Congress's back while having us lose some of our liberties.
In addition, I have had to shell out $94 for an FBI background check & fingerprints to be able to RENEW the hazmat endorsement on my CDL. Then, had to drive nearly 90mi one way on my weekend off to get the fingerprints done at a state approved site. Sadly, any terrorist will figure out a way to create havoc with a hazmat load without a CDL or picking it up at the customer.

No. I think we had plenty of ability to protect the country BEFORE 9/11 -- our government just ignored the warnings(which have since been published more than once). The patriot act gives unchecked power in certain areas, and infringes on our civil liberties, basically wounding our country on the excuse of protecting our country, and we deserve better than that.

No.
Giving up freedoms for safety is counter-productive to the war in which we define as: defending freedom.
I understand America's in a tough place and terrorism's a tough enemy. There has to be a better way. There just HAS to.
I don't have anything to hide, mind you. I love America and anyone who looks at the history of site's I've visited will see www.goarmy.com in it.
I guess I just expect my government to protect me from intrusion. Both from 3rd parties and itself. I like smaller government.

I'm for any act that will keep us safe from another terrorist attack. If you are afraid that your civil liberties have been violated, when was the last time the feds have knocked on your door?
